The BLAST Axe & Archery Club invites you summon forth your inner amazon and throw axes (hatchets) with us.

ABOUT AXE THROWING
Indoor competitive axe throwing is a sport that is taking off nationwide. Axe-throwing bars are designed to allow people to throw (hatchets, knives, Ninja stars, etc.) at wooden targets. Often with drinks and, sometimes, food.

TIME
Show up at noon to pay, sign the waiver, and join your team. We will throw for an hour or 20 throws each, whichever comes first.

COST
$20/person for an hour. (If you want a longer session sometime, it’s $35/person for a 2.5-hour group session- 6 or more people.) Cash preferred, but will take credit cards at the door.

ABOUT TODAY
• Important: Wear closed-toe shoes.
• Our lanes each have two targets, and two women will throw at once.
• Since there’s a limit on how many can play, this event is for BLAST members. You can’t bring a guest (except to watch) or RSVP+1 this time.
• In the comments below, please write either THROW or WATCH so we have an accurate headcount to give the axe range manager.

Game of Axes opened in Boynton in February 2019. They have seven two-target lanes. Hatchets and big hatchets are currently available for throwing. (Will have knives eventually.) They also have a bar that serves beer, wine, water, and pop.

Game of Axes, an indoor ax throwing arena, is slated to open in Boynton Beach in November.

The 2,995-square-foot arena, at 12550 S. Military Trail, will be open daily. Players earn points by throwing an ax at a target. There will be nine lanes with 18 targets, so pairs play against each other.

“Our vision for the facility is to bring people together,” co-owner Joey Magee said, adding that employees, considered ax masters, will teach people how to stand, throw an ax and hit the target.

Magee said ax throwing arenas – which originated in Canada – are also popular in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Illinois and Michigan.

He said that he’s been working on the project for the past year, but it was difficult to find a location where the concept is approved by both the city and the landlord. People are not familiar with the ax throwing concept, so they were concerned, he said.

South Florida has at least one ax throwing bar – Chops + Hops at 702 N.E. First Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. An ax throwing lounge, Extreme Throwing, is scheduled to open at 540 N. Miami Ave. in Miami in September, according to its website. Axe Throwing Society, at 1301 W. Copans Road in Pompano Beach, is also scheduled to open soon, according to its website.

Boynton Beach is considered an emerging neighborhood and is home to a wave of new development and concepts.

It’s called “urban axe-throwing” and the concept of tossing a 4-pound blade at a wooden target is now available in Boynton Beach. Owner Joey Magee recently opened Game of Axes in a shopping plaza near Military Trail and Flavor Pict Road, at the Boynton Beach-Delray border and so far it’s been a hit. Newcomers are trained by “axe masters” before they start throwing axes at one of the 18 targets at the end of nine lanes. And just like darts or bowling, each throw is awarded points by its proximity of the thrown axe to the center of the target.

Oshry and Joey Magee, owners of Game of Axes axe throwing bar in Boynton Beach Tuesday, February 19, 2019. “The game actually orginated in Canada, in Toronto, in a league called the Backyard Axe Throwing League,” Joey said. “It got popular really fast. I decided with my wife to open one up. When you come into our facility, you will sign a waiver, then you would go over some safety guidelines and throwing techniqes before you play. There have been no accidents, and we like to keep it that way. Safety is our number one priority.” [BRUCE R. BENNETT/palmbeachpost.com]
